FRUITS EXTRACTED FROM THE FIELD
Peru has a high diversity of fruits, with around 623 species, some of them unknown to the world—even to city dwellers. The coast, Andes, and Amazon are home to numerous fruit trees. The native fruits of Peru have exotic flavors of a very delightful taste. These fruits are one of the many charms that attract and surprise visitors of our country. The production and export of fruits has registered a very interesting increase throughout the last decade. Some fruits, such as Hass avocado, tangerine, blueberries, and ginger have found important commercial opportunities in foreign markets. The evolution can be even greater due to the potential of usable land and the climates that favor production.
That is why we present here four of the fruits that Peru offers. Some are only found seasonally, so keep in mind when you can find them.

ABOUT THE HASS AVOCADO
The avocado is currently the most commercialized fruit in the world. It has a soft texture and an oval pyriform shape. Currently, there are around 32,000 hectares of hass avocado cultivation. This fruit has potassium, and is a source of energy and healthy fats. Its magnesium content boosts the nervous and muscular systems and regulates blood glucose levels.

ABOUT BLUEBERRIES
Blueberries have become a trending product this decade. Thanks to its diversity of climates, peru can offer different varieties of blueberries throughout the year, the best-known are: ventura, legacy, biloxi, among others. They are blue and black colored and have a pleasant sweet-sour taste. Blueberries have been recognized as a superfruit due to its nutritional characteristics: they contain the highest amount of antioxidants compared to other fruits.

ABOUT GINGER
The most known part of the ginger plant—also known as “kion” in Peru—is its rhizome. It grows in tropical regions all over the world. It is famous both for its recognized medicinal properties and for its culinary use. The variety found regularly in the market originates from China and Peru. The plant has a thick stem and can reach up to one meter of height. It is currently one of the main agricultural resources exported from Peru.

ABOUT TANGERINES
Tangerines are fruits from the citrus species. Peru has become one of the main exporters of tangerines in America, offering different varieties—including the well-known varieties Satzuma (Okitsu, Owari) and W. Murcott (highly valued because it is seedless). Its skin is yellowish green to orange and its pulp has an orange color. The pulp contains high contents of vitamins C, B, and reducing sugars; and hence, helps preventing cardiovascular diseases.
